An Introduction to Counselling: Listening Skills

An overview.
Based in Blackburn, Lancashire, this course is for those who would like to understand or improve their listening skills. Mostly experiential learning it combines the fundamentals of the skills that counsellors use to build empathy with others and use different types of listening.

Who is this course for?
This course will be appropriate for anyone who wants to have more meaningful and effective relationships with others in their personal or professional life.

Aims of the course.
To provide students with knowledge, awareness and skills that will be helpful when communicating with others.
At the end of the course, completion of a 1000-word written assignment or a 10-minute recording will earn you an Award in Listening Skills confirming learning in the following areas:

How is the course delivered?
Taking place in 2 ½ hour sessions over eight weeks (9:30-12:00) the course is designed to pass on knowledge and give you the opportunity to practice what you are learning in learning environment.
The course in intentionally delivered to a small group so that every person has space to engage in the learning.

Theoretical underpinnings.
The person-centred principles of Carl Rogers underpin this course and therefore makes it appropriate to working in the helping professions and the ideal stepping stone for continuing your studies to a counselling skills course, if that’s what you want to do.

The assessment process.
At the end of the course, you will be invited to take part in sharing how you are applying your learning in the form of a 1000-word reflection. Further details are provided in the course and are indicated in the course handbook.
Completion of the course will earn you an Award in Listening Skills and will earn you 2 academic credits.

When does it take place?
Classes are held 9:30-12:00 on Wednesday mornings between 30 April 2025 – 18 June 2025.

Costs
£295 per person for all teaching, handouts and materials, assessment and certification. Payable in instalments.
About the facilitators/assessors.

Samantha Crapnell MACPP, MNCPS (Accred), MBACP, CIPD
Sam is an accredited Therapeutic Counsellor, Clinical Supervisor, Training Facilitator, Personal Development Facilitator and Executive Coach. Working mostly in private practice now, she also has experience of working with the charity sector, adults and young people in education. Her broad spectrum of therapeutic work most commonly resides in anxiety, depression and relational trauma.
She is active in the counselling community, providing opportunities for continuing professional development which enhance practice and is currently studying for her Professional Doctorate with a specialist interest in the personal and professional learning and development of counsellors.
Emily Clarke
Emily is a Therapeutic Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor. Working mostly in private practice, as well as working within the charity sector as a Deputy Manager at a counselling service. Emily has extensive experience working therapeutically as a school based counsellor supporting young people in education. She also has a range of experience working with adults which includes working at The Women’s Centre, alongside the NHS and in private practice with both adults and teenagers. She is extremely passionate about helping people to reach their full potential and her range of therapeutic work is mostly encased around bereavement and loss, anxiety, depression and low-self-esteem.
